B&Q have anounced a 50% increase in profits for the last quarter

does this mean we are back to the same position as in the 90s when people went back to diy rather than get the job done right by a professional

mike,i have noticed ba nd q is pretty busy for people buying tiles, not only have i been fitting lots of them but every time im in the aisles r busy,

it seems things are slowly shifting here,my dad runs a veiwing agency for house sales and is now pretty busy again, not so many people buying just yet but lots more looking it seems and confidence may be gettiing better:thumbsup:

i think your right alot of peeps are d.i.y ing even when they do ring for a quote 9 times out of 10 its cheapy £6.99 a m2 tiles from B and poo.

B&Q have got very clever with their marketing over the last year, tempting people in with £50 off and half price offers for one day only here and there. I read a report today saying that wickes are expecting next weekend (bank hol weekend) to be one of the best they have ever had

Better park me van in wickes car park this weekend then might get some jobs from it :lol:

II think the park your van thing is a good idea if you have nothing on. Watch out for time limits though in some car parks

to be honest, i am glad b&q are doing well because that means theres more chance of us picking up the tiling work...the old law of averages...the average diyer, isnt always that confident when it comes to larger format & stone tiles and its even better when their numpty staff give out the wrong info because it puts the pro tiler in a much better position when they go round to price rectifying the mess!!

i know their tiles are a little bit 'challenging' at times?? but its better to be sticking their tiles than nothing at all..

i shove a5 adverts in their 600x600 boxes of tiles,,,,,,,shoooooosssshhh dont tell anyone

Homebase profits are up too, however all is not what it appears!!

The reason they are all making larger 'profits' isnt due to the increase in sales its down to cutbacks, restructuring etc.

I was talking the manager of my local Homebase this afternoon and we were dicussing the B&Poo (thanks for that one Andy, childish but i like it ) profits. He said Homebase had done the same thing they have even changed power suppliers in an attempt to save money and changed timers on lighting etc.

However whilst it makes everyone think that things are picking up, its actually pretty misleading, especially if you are a shareholder! Obviously we wont see the same increase next year as there is a limit to how much they can cut their costs.

I dont have a problem with the sheds doing well, as Ed says while there selling there tiles, kitchens and bathrooms it means someone somewhere has gotta be fitting the stuff.

thanks for shedding some light on this scottley

I hate B&Q doing well, their whole attitude leaves a lot to be desired

homebase at least have some idea of customer care and pleasant staff

a bit random but I predict that Homebase will be taken over by Wickes at the end of this year or early next year. I have no evidence that this will happen it's just someone told me to keep an eye on them.

tbh I dont see how homebase survive, they started as a part of sainsburys and were sold off

it wouldnt surprise me if wickes made a move on them

it could be a good time to buy shares in homebase before this becomes common knowledge

Interesting that United, Travis perkins own wickes and focus so they have i large interest. Ill ask my friend who manages my local store if there are any rumours.

Mike, my niece and sister used to work in Homebase in LB. My sister ran the showroom upstairs, always helpful to have your sister selling kitchens and bathrooms when you fit them

Yeah see if someone 'inside' knows anything. It wouldn't be too good for competition if they did go as B&Q (Kingfisher) and Wickes (Travis Perkins) would own everything :yikes:

They survive on our town United by royally shafting us for everything they sell! They have the 'monopoly' as they are the only place to buy anything remotely diy on a weekend or late night.

Mike did you use PPD the paint shop opposite homebase?

I had also heard that Tesco were gonna take over Homebase in LB to turn it into a megastore

Hi Scottley

I moved to colour supplies a while ago after simon moved to them

cs can get me the scumbles etc im going to need from next year

ive been able to buy from kalon at the same price as ppd paid anyway, so only had the stock off them they were tucked up with and were selling off below cost

that was a waste of a good oppurtunity and im not surprised they closed
