backer board

i need to put backer board on a Hardwall plastered wall but have no room for battens! Question is can i dot and dab the board to this type of surface. only using small ceramic tiles so weight is not really an issue. Also it's in a bathroom.

I haven't got the time to allow it to dry if i have it skimmed. It's in a bathroom but NOT the shower wall. I probably could use plasterboard but only have a 20mm gap between a water pipe and and the wall to accommodate board and a 7mm tile. i thought backerboard was thinner.

If it's only being skimmed it will take only a day to dry (always take a little heater with me if the rads missing just to help things along sometimes)

If its only a skim coat it'll dry in a day or two mate,

I assume then Mark that the wall is not in good condition? Backerboards in my experience are not flat. Certainly hardiebacker at 6mm isn't flat and usually need to mechanically fixing to bring it into line. if it is for patching up, why not try something like Ardex AM100 which has fast drying time or even Wickes 1 coat plaster. That dries in 2 hours.

the wall was constructed by pro bilders about 6 weeks ago and is flat. well near enough, so i'll just skim it. I was told by this forum that i could not tile straight onto hardwall mix. Or can i with a primer?

Sorry Mark, I am not familier with the phrase "hardwall mix". Is this bonding plaster you are talking about?

yes it is a bonding plaster for use directly onto masonry. It's in the Thistle range.

Sounds like a good case for Wickes 1 coat plaster then. Dave, our illustrious Admin and resident tiling God swears by it.

Hardwall is not bonding, It's an under coat plaster with higher impact resistance and quicker drying surface

Base coats are not suitable for tiling to........The one coat that i use is a finish coat but rapid setting....and can be used for deep sections as well......

I've skimmed it with Thistle multi- finish so hopefully it's okay and it was flat before my plastering.
