I assume then Mark that the wall is not in good condition? Backerboards in my experience are not flat. Certainly hardiebacker at 6mm isn't flat and usually need to mechanically fixing to bring it into line. if it is for patching up, why not try something like Ardex AM100 which has fast drying time or even Wickes 1 coat plaster. That dries in 2 hours.
