feeling the pain today dave?

I get a bad back when gardening or doing DIY usually. For me the back ache is always there now and I just take pain killers as and when. I also have problems with my hips and headaches, as well as blood pressure, so I rattle quite nicely with pills.

Your back needs protecting and knowing how to bend, lift etc certainly helps. If I can, I tend to sit on the floor and work if I'm working low to the ground, rather than crouching or bending. I also have an appalling posture in the office at work too.

So for me it's watching what I'm doing, stretching when I need to, exercising to build the muscle strength around my stomach and back and making sure I lie on my back in bed.

I'm hoping to get back into swimming too

that's a point , id have to go buy some speed-o's ,you can't use a camera in a public pool anymore i try-ed to take a pic of one of my kid's swimming when they were younger, and three life guards came and told me NO so that was the end of that,to much political correctness IMO  anyway ya len's steam's up

Bad back...Bad back - don't get me started.....
When I was 14 I started doing medieval re-enactments which for the next 10 years softened me brains and and kept me incredibly fit. Got Married and all that mallarky stopped for a while. I then started working in the Theatre in Am Dram as a stage hand. Second show in I twisted and picked up a stage weight and popped a disk out. Had nowt but problems since. Now suffer with arthritis in my upper back as well which resulted in an op last year and 12 months of physio later it's still no better....Me knees ache from years of grovelling to the mrs and the odd bit of floor screeding which has knacked me elbows and me fingers. Always flares up this time of year with the cold so as I work from home I try to hibernate in my nice warm office but it don't always work. Bin doing some excercise lately which is helping no end so will probably keep that up. Seeing a cardiologist in January to see if me ticker is going to last longer than me back and me knees :yikes:......43 now and fallin to bits......I'm awfully well though for the shape that I'm in

Exactly the same as you Gooner - muscles spasms in the cervical/thoracic region about 4 times a year and can put me out of action for a week at a time. Diclofenac and Diazepam helps.
First time I got it was when I was 13 years old - my dad suffered too but he grew out of it. I grew quite quickly and my physio said that my back muscles didn't keep up with my spine and are slightly too short and under tension.
Used to workout in the gym all the time to increase the muscle mass and for 5 years never had a twinge.
Luckily I've suffered so long I know the warning signs and can take appropriate action to stop it going full on spasm.

Lower back for me, just seems when I'm walking the left cheek knots up then travels to the lower back and tightens the whole lot, tried a spray called magnesium oil which soaks into the skin and allows a certain amount of relief.

Also tried Glucosamine gel plus which when rubbed into the muscles which are tight tends to loosen, do take Glucosamine sulphate one a day when I remember
