surgical procedures have come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of decades. When I had my first cartlidge out 25 years ago, I was bed ridden in hospital for a fortnight and off work for 3 months:incazzato:The last op was keyhole, about 7 years ago (long overdue another now:oops:) and I was told to leave it a week or two before I went back. I actually had the op on a Friday and went back to work on the Monday:thumbsup:

God, it's like reading through my old patient list! I used to fix backs for a living, so know what I am talking about, and to cut a very long theory lesson short so I don't loose you straight away the only way to protect your lower back is to have strong stomach muscles.

Simple exercise: Stand with your knees ever so slighty bent and pull your tummy in as you breathe OUT, tensing the muscles all the way round to the back. Pull your navel towards your spine, slowly and deeply. Keep your hands on your hips pointing backwards so the finger tips feel the muscles next to your lower spine, as you breathe out you should feel those back muscles tense, try and tense them more and then relax, but keep the posture and you should feel a kind of therapeutic effect. Repeat as often as possible, i.e do this every day several times, while you are waiting for the kettle to boil or whatever, get into the habit. Also tense those muscles the same way when you lift something and NEVER lift and twist.

The muscles go into spasm to protect your spinal chord when there is a slight displacement of ANY part of the spine, that is why muscle relaxants work, as do nervous relaxants, like valium.. you get the picture.

Swimming is not necessarily the best exercise for a back in which the tissues have become overstretched by wrong movement, much better to grow your own 'girdle' with strong stomach muscles.
Ok I stop now,... if just one of you do this exercise my job for today is done...

Stand with your knees ever so slighty bent,
I've got a bad back of course my knees are bent
and pull your tummy in
Yeap doing that also, the bird on the otherside of the road is fit
as you breathe OUT,
Yeap smoking as we speak,
tensing the muscles
Yeap still looking at that bird,
Pull your navel towards your spine, slowly and deeply.
She's loving this now!
Keep your hands on your hips pointing backwards so the finger tips feel the muscles next to your lower spine
I think she wants to feel my muscles
as you breathe out you should feel those back muscles tense,
She's coming over! evethings tense
try and tense them more and then relax,
RELAX HOW!! What the hell and i'm going to say, quick how about "hi oxy-acetylene" (sure it sound better when somebody else said it)
The muscles go into spasm to protect your spinal chord when there is a slight displacement of ANY part of the spine

I suffer with a bad back as I have an odd shaped spine. Tiling is murder for it but it is a lot better if im sensible with it (thats the problem). Always a good idea to do a light warm up in the morning before work. I also wear a back support when im doing any heavy lifting or laying floors. Most often its the muscles in your back that you hurt, not anything more serious so soak it in a really hot bath and try lightly stretching before you go to bed. This seems to keep it in chech with me, hope it is of some help to you.
