basalt tiles - will this dry ok?

hi, new to forum.

we are laying the problematic but nice looking basalt tiles on a kitchen floor. followed all advice re water based impregnator, the tiles have come out like the following picture - they were laid only yesterday though.

question is: is this what you would expect? dark/damp patches where the adhesive is - which is water i guess. but will these patches disappear when it dries?

they should of been laid on a full bed of adhesive they look like they've beed dot and dabbed if so will stain and prob come unstuck in time imo

Ahh!!!.. they have been spot fixed.......


I think you might just find that with basalt, they are now knacked..

As above they should be solid bedded to prevent shadowing and even colour change as basalt is like you say problematic if not laid correctly..

you have the option to see if they dry out but looking at the way they have been fixed, you have very little structural strength to the fixing side of things..

Looks like dot & dab.if you used slow set you may be able to pull them up before it fully sets.

omg why do some tilers use this fixing method, should have had a solid bed and back skimmed, what a shame

no but we have paid for the tiles. thats about 800 quids worth.

i edited my last post as i asked if they had paid tiler, then i realised they may have done the job them self

well, we've got a general builder in doing lots of renovations, been very happy with work up to now (plumbing/electrical/joinery) but it looks like he's never done stone tiles before i guess

Spot fixed.... Should have been back-skimmed and solid-bed fixed like this.....

The stone is ruined IMO and will start to fail soon. Sorry there is no good news......

He will have the labour & money to put it right then.Dont pay this guy any more money for anything

you need to have a serious word with your builder, dont let him fob you of , its wrong what he as done ,

is there any point me trying to pull up the tiles myself today? it was quick drying adhesive, so thats around 24 hours

you could try,but if its rapid might be to late.

if its not fully dry and you scrap the back,you might be lucky

If he's unsure how to lay these he shouldn't have attempted it. Unfortunately it's happening more and more where builders think they know how to tile and end up ruining the job. I'd be asking for him to supply replacements and get a professional in to do the job
