Bathroom started, wrong from the start? Advice appreciated please.

Hi all, I've got a bathroom fitter starting on my bathroom he's put Hardiebacker all around the bath area, he was going to put hardiebacker at the bottom and middle and plasterboard at the top but I asked for full cement board.

He's used 6mm hardiebacker, which I believe is for the floor but possibly acceptable on a wall, he only stuck it to the plaster/breezeblock wall so I requested that he screwed it as well after doing some research, I also asked that he 'tape' the joints, he appears to have gaffer taped it, rather than fibreglass taped it and skimmed it with adhesive.

He's used 9.5mm normal plasterboard on the walls not moisture resistant, I believe 9.5 is only for ceilings.

Am I correct in requesting that he needs to remove all the boarding and replace it with 12mm hardiebacker as there's not much difference in price between that and moisture resistant plasterboard.
and hardiebacker would be preferable for longevity.

We are in our 50's, this is a bungalow and we want it to be right and last for decades not have to redo it if moisture gets through to the plasterboard, we also can't afford to have it done twice.

Yes you are correct 12mm hardie on walls not 6mm

Firstly Hardie boards are water resistant not waterproof which means they they won't get damaged by water but they can let the water get through and damage the walls behind. For boarding around wet areas the best option is so called tile backer boards Wedi type. Hardie boards still need painted with waterproofing paint whilst Wedi boards are totally waterproof

You can also fix 6mm to a solid masonry using 3 lines of grab adhesive and a minimum of 9 screws.

9.5mm Gyproc wallboard (plasterboard) is called wallboard for a reason. Yes it can be used on walls, providing it is installed correctly.

It is not how I would do things, but each to their own I suppose.
