Battons, battens?

Tomorrow, well later on today!! I am going to get some battons. I will probably go to my local timber yard and get them to rip up some ply.

What sort of thickness should i get? Also how wide i was thinking 80mm should be ok.

Any ideas?, what do you guys use for your battons?

for supporting tiles? when I use them, I get 50 x 25mm pse

for supporting tiles if its just ceramics i use door stop make sure you look down them before buying and pick the stright ones

Get mine from my local builders yard, more chance of them being straight than B and Q, 50x25mm

why PSE? would it not be better to use tanalised sawn timber.

L shaped aluminium with a variety of fixing holes drilled in work well and reusable and the addy is easily cleaned off.

it's just smoother Alan and tends to clean up easier after use

any old 2 x 1 out of any local timber yard. ply is a bit overkilll. Buy loads if you have some where to keep it. Mine just dissapears because it gets used for every thing. (boxing, bathframes etc)

Planed square edged... in other words it is dressed timber.. ready for decoration..

I just use kiln dried batons from one of the usual DIY shops, think they are 2 x 1 but I'm not sure.

I have started to use a level on my baton stands

I use 32mm x 19mm kiln dried from a diy shed, cheap as chips, just make sure you get straight ones, some can be a bit bowed you have to check.

Must admit I've done away with battens now.

me to very seldom use them.... I set out room using pole laser level making sure there no silly cuts. If the tile is no bigger than 25*20 or doesn't slide, start with a row which suits then I tile the bottom then the top. If the tile is large format start at floor level and use coloured window packer wedges to get a level row and then use pegs.... hate spacers
