best way to remove paint

My mate called and he wants me to tile his moms bathroom... Im gonna go down Tue to have a look but I know the walls are painted. Is it essential this paint is removed?

She hasnt chosen yet ive got to measure it up... Are some tiles ok to use. On painted walls? If so what tiles are they or what is the max weight per m2 I can use?

Hey Mr T.

Yes is the straight answer. You should remove 85-95% of the paint off the substrate.
I personally find some elbow grease and a thin bladed painters scraper & a stanley blade does the job.

If you tile onto PVA you are asking the Adhesive to adhere to a thin layer of glue (Other major PVA flaws obvious will occur but that is another story)
So bearing the above in mind, if you try to adhere adhesive to paint it has to adhere to a thin layer of paint which wont hold anything but also PAINT is a hard material to stick to (full stop)
Get a piece of selotape and stick onto paint... it wont stick.

Well this post doesnt even matter as the bathroom is tiled and now will start a thread on how to tile on top of tiles lol but thanks for the info lads im sure it will come in handy eventually.

would a textured adhesive work if you couldnt get the paint off?. we use a similar product when rendering onto a painted surface. obviously the paint has to be sounds due to the weight its gonna have to hold

Most efficient way i have used of removing paint from a plastered / plasterboard wall is angle grinder with cupped wheel
