Need to strip the old mastic out of a shower with quite a lot of black mould around it.

Will scrape away all mould that I can, but is there a product to use which will kill it off before re-siliconing to minimise quick grow back?

Cheers.

when re-applying the Silicon use a mould resistant one, usually a bit dearer but as you will notice save you having to do it any time soon again!

Yep, totally agree.
The problem part was where the mould spores are in the grout and between underside of frame/tiles to tray joints.

Remove the old Silicon and give the whole surface a good srub with clhorine bleach, then as Dave suggests re-apply a mould resistant Silicon.

Tell the client that mould need warm, damp, still air conditions to thrive. By increasing air circulation it will make life tough for mould and the new Silicon will withstand it's attack for alot longer.

hi frosty

bleach does work but i use polycell 3 in 1 as it helps to prevent regrowth

this is a real problem now with houses being increasingly airtight

building regs specify frequent air changes to keep humidity down

bathrooms should now have an extractor fitted as standard but if this is a retrofit then they are often left out on cost grounds

if they have one ensure they use it or if its busted or non existant then they need one fitted to cure this problem

the alternative is they leave the window open when they shower and for an hour or so afterwards

Mould also needs food, usually dust or something!?! Not sure how you would phrase that to a customer though... 😳

"HG - Mould Spray, will effectively remove black or brown mould/fungus/algae spots from Silicon joints and plaster. Will also remove coffee/tea stains from plastic worktops.

THATS THE ONE I USE nICK,GOOD STUFF BUT OPEN THE WINDOWS AS ITS VERY POTENT.

Nasty stuff : As you know this is only a temporary measure as the black mould will keep coming back until the root of the problem is addressed.
