Hippie Mummy

hi im sorry if im posting this but i need some advice as every source i read on the internet every one is contradicting each other on what should be done

i just wrote a massive post and when trying to add pix the screen froze and had to refresh and lost it all grrr

basically going to try and keep this short and sweet

were moving the bath from our downstairs bathroom in to our ensuite

weve taken the door off our ensuite and cut a hole for a new door , tomorrow we are starting on blocking up the old one which is where the bath will be going
so building a new frame and attaching plasterboard to it ive gotten mixed advice on what i should do about the gaps around the edges some say tape then skim over others say use bonding coat to fill the gaps. what is the best thing to do on the side where the tiles will be going

also when i do have the boards up and gaps covered do i tile straight on to the PB or do i skim it first. and if i skim how long do i have to wait before tileing and do i need to paint the wall before i tile . the rest of the bathroom has a skim (i dont trust the previous guys work as he bodged a lot of crap in my house that we've had to fix)

do i pva the boards to seal them or buy another type of sealer or do i adhesive straight on to the boards what is the best way to go about this job i have attached photos to try and show the current situation sorry they are the wrong way around i dont know how to rotate them the plan is to mirror the tiles that are already there on the other side then have the bath in that gap with the shower over it
(the door is just there on its side to stop my 16 month old twins getting in)

any and all advice would be great we really need to get as much of this done as we can tomorrow
please just tell me what to do like i am about 5 lol

Thank you so much in advance
lexie

Perhaps box in the pipes. Can't see them in the pictures to see what you mean though to be honest. :-/

Don't use PVA, use a primer suitable for tiling (acrylic).

Don't skim. Skimming plasterboard means they'll take less weight than just tiling straight to them.

If you're having a shower in that area, perhaps consider waterproof tile backerboards instead? (Wedi, Marmox are a couple of makes)

Consider the weight of the tiles too, what tiles are you using? If it's heavy stone or porcelain tiles you might find plasterboard doesn't cut the mustard and you need to use tile backerboards anyway. Ceramics and light porcelain tiles should be fine and dandy over plasterboard.

If you do just use plasterboard, make sure you "tank" it (paint it with a waterproof tanking system - that's a link to show you an example).

I think I've answered most things there?

the existing walls are stud walls with plaster board and a skim on them the white tiles that are there atm where the shower is/was i started removing today and they came straight off the wall so they werent stuck down very well (not surprised at all the guy who did it is a massive bodge king) so i plan to re tile the entire area to make sure itd done right so now im wondering if when ive got the tiles off and my plaster board up where the door is (the shower thats going over the bath will be staying where it is atm where the white tiles are so where im blocking up wont get as wet kinda thing )
im thinking i should skim the door way so i have 1 even surface otherwise the wall will dip by a few ml from where it is skimmed atm to where the new board is ??
i just had a look at that link for the tanking stuff and it looks good

(sorry to be reli dim im only 23 so dont have masses of diy know how but im working on it )
how would i go about doing that type of thing with a bath tub would i seal the bath to the wall then put that tape stuff on the bath tub join and the wall corner joins and paint the stuff on and once id done that would it then be water proof and i could go ahead and tile ?
im looking at some tiles from tops tiles called siena beige there ceramic (it wont let me put any links in my post)
and was thinking BAL white star tile adhesive ?

my tiling experience to date is replacing some plain white tiles over our old bath b4 selling it (job didn't have to be good just had to look it) and when we tiled our kitchen which was those mosaics on the net stuff and that was just splash back around the work top all done with unibond adhesive and grout so this is still kinda new Territory to me and i want to make sure its done right

the main problem is with 16 month old babies in the house really i need to leave the bath plumbed in downstairs untill last minute then rip it out and re plumb it in upstairs so its out of order for no more than a day really so with tiling i was planning to tile the area from the celing down and leave spaceto put the bath in then tile up to the bath

Dan where you say
Don't use PVA, use a primer suitable for tiling (acrylic).
could you please give me an example of a primer, would the tanking stuff you linked me to do that job or would i have to prime the area to be tiled then use that stuff then adhesive, tiles, grout ??

I really appreciate your help :)

You'd need the primer when using Plasterboard or Plaster Skimming with a Cement adhesive, and the reason is the two don't react. Any tile shop that sells adhesive will sell an acrylic primer. So I'd need to know what tile shops you have really with regards to what primer to recommend.

Mapei sponsor us, and so do Tile Giant.
So the Mapei one available from Tile Giant is this one, and you can buy it online too.
Primer G 1KG

Good stuff that.

If you're using a cement board though in the end, and cement-based adhesive, you may not need primer.
