a gauge rod or STAFF as they are known,is a long piece of 2''X1''LENGTHof wood which you mark with a pencil the size of the tile and spacer all along the staff,this then helps you when setting out.The staff can be easily adjusted and shows where the tiles will be on the wall.Simple but very effective,hope this helps.
