Can Anyone Help ?!?!?!

im finding it really hard to find work at the moment im getting some bits but not alot. would be really grateful if somebody could give me some advice....

hi ive tried sending buisness cards out. driving round to big sites and asking for contractors numbers job, sites. just everything i seem to do doesnt seem to get anywhere.

Maybe a little background about yourself would help us out, are you a newbie or not. Do you do mainly site work etc ???

basically i was a tilers mate for a few years labourin etc. then decided i didnt want to do that anymore so new the basics so i then went and done a nvq tiling course and my mate was in the same position but didnt do the course so for the last year we just been hitting the site work together. but things have seem to dry up

When things go quiet for me I always look on the job centre website, loads of agencies and contractors list jobs on there. A lot of it is temporary and might not be right on your doorstep but at the end of the day it's work!

Just keep trying to get work, do any job that comes up, it is hard at the start but you will get there, i started the exact same way working for my mate then went out on my own. i really struggled at the start, wife, two kids, house etc, but i just kept going & slowly built up a reputation for being a good honest tradesman. I ended up giving my mate a start as i got a start with a local house builder, work for myself though, subcontactor. As said above i used to go into the local job centre to see who was looking for a tiler & got a couple of leads through them. dont give up you will get there.

It takes time on your own, I started up two years ago from nothing, and i now work everyday some evenings and weekends. maybe travel further a field. Be honest do a quality job and your get there.

And there lies the answer in my opinion. It is tough out there right now. You MUST set yourself apart from the rest through quality, punctuality, and service.
I set up in early 2007 just before all the doom and gloom and I'm grateful for that head-start. I think realistically you have to be prepared for a sluggish start as you develop a reputation.
Also remember that there is a fairly large element of truth in the saying "it's not what you know - it's who you know".
Especially true when it comes to getting the opportunities.

Thanks for your help. duno if you could help now though i manage to get some work back with a company i worked with before but now i have another company asking me to work for them i also did abit of work for them aswell so not to sure what to do now......... any suggestions...... one drama to another lol

Play them against each other. If they know they can't get you becuase someone else wants you, they'll usually want you all the more.
Also helps focus their mind when it comes to how much your services are worth.

Enjoy telling them that you are torn between two offers. The situation puts you in control to a degree - so exploit it (carefully).

im in the same boat at moment mate.done the cards,chated to companys etc .im turning my hand to a bit of anything to fill the gaps (painting,shed bases,small garden walls )word is slowly gettin about now.I find the best thing is chatting to as many people as you can (also got the missus putting the word round---as she is very good at chatting !!!!):lol:

Sub to both? i first started with one company but soon left them when others realised my potential. i started at very low prices to get me busy and slowly increased to be competitive and to start earning a constant day wage or job price depending how things work for you best.

But i follow the strict policy of Honesty being punctual quality and value.

In less than two years this has taken me from nothing to subbing work out to those who once taught me. When i first started up because i had no history of private work behind me and i was only 19 people did not want to no, well i battled through and this is my position now.

Keep your head up and be confident.
