Can anyone tell me what this is?

Hi all,

I'll soon be starting a floor tiling job at my house. However, I'm unsure what this substrate is? I need to know so I can choose the right adhesive.

I peeled back the carpet and there are no joins in the substrate. Is it a levelling compound?

It's rock solid and feels like concrete. If you dig at it with a sharp object, like a screwdriver, you can dig a grove into a it, but it's not easy. It's rock hard. It has a browny colour, and is very slightly dusty.

What is it? What adhesive would I use? And should I seal it (with pva, for example) before tiling?

Many thanks.

looks like fibre reinforced concrete to me.......just not laid very well!........if its solid........SLC it! and go, go, go!

dont use PVA.......find a propper tiling primer like weber pr360 or equivelent!

all the best

or a fibre reinforced sand and cement screed, (looks to have been laid on the dry side) as long as it's not crumbling then should be OK to use.

Many thanks for the info.

What adhesive would I need to use for this? So no sealing required?

Also, part of the area I'm tiling has already been tiled - they've been down for 13 years and they're as solid as a rock with no cracking. Looking at the level, I'd say no SLC has been used.

Just advice on adhesive would be great. Many thanks!

Prime with pr360 then use a cement based adhesive. Use single part flexible if using porcelain. If using slc prime before and after laid

Very much looks like a fibre re-inforced sand cement screed with a naff surface finish.
Prime and slc as with previous posts, stick with same manufacturer for primer slc and adhesive would also be my advice.
