can i varnish a stone hearth???

mornin peeps,
i've put a few sandstone slabs down as a hearth before the log stove is installed, and i'm wondering if i can use clear matt finish varnish instead of a tile sealer. any help appreciated, geoff

I would not be tempted to for a couple of reasons. Firstly sandstone needs to breathe! If you seal it with varnish you will be doing no good for the stone and stopping it from breathing, this coupled with heat could/may cause the stone to spall(Explode). I would be tempted to use a good quality penetrating sealer and then once dry apply a topical sealer if you want to make the surface easy to clean. I would try both processes on a spare bit to make sure you are happy with the appearance and the stone accepts it and also you need to consider that the topical sealer will need to be reapplied on a regular basis.
