Can stained quarry tiles be stripped back and redone with a gloss finish??

Hi,

A friend of a neighbour has Quarry tiles fitted in her kitchen, and apparently they have got dirty and cant seem to be cleaned.
Without looking, it seems like they have not been sealed to me, as they are so porous does this mean the dirt is too ingrained and cant be shifted.
My neighbour says her friend wants them stripped back and redoing with a gloss finish.
This is all I know til I get to go round there,but I would just like to arm myself with a bit of knowledge first, as I have never layed or had anything to do with Quarry tiles as of yet.

I would use Aqua mix Heavy-duty tile and grout cleaner on those. Mix cleaner 1 part cleaner to 2 parts water, apply solution to surface, allow to dwell for 5-10 minutes, agitate with a scrub brush and do not let it dry on tiles, mop up dirty water and rinse with clean water. I would use a rotary scrubber and a good wet vac for that job, and wear gloves when applying the solution. Try tradetiler i think he has started stocking Aquamix.

Thanks Enduro,sounds like it could take a while, but where would I get a rotary scrubber from,hire it maybe?

Not all quarries need sealing...They could just have surface grime or been sealed previously and that had grabbed dirt...

If you cannot get hold of the products enduro has recommended then you could try LTP Grimex....that should bring them up...or even lithofin wexa....

Then when clean do a water test and see if they absorb water....simply put a few droplets on the tiles and leave for 10 mins or so and wipe of if you have spots where the water was then they will accept sealer....

It's just that some quarries are vitrified and don't really need sealing...

Blue vin123 -Before you start you'll have to determine what tile it is first.
If you haven't seen it yet its difficult to give advice.
I've got Ruabon quarries in my office and they've been down for 20 years and they still look good with cleaning from fairy liquid.
Quarries tend to be of a very low porosity material and high fired so I'am of the opinion that your floor in question is not quarry - possibly terracotta!

sounds like an earlier post were the tiler left acid on the tiles for two days sure they were quarry tiles (dave do you remember ):8:
