Anyone know if hardibacker or similar can be screwed directly to joists as opposed to on top of anoth board

That is fabulou. Thankyou. I will now go down that route. Will be removing the floorboards, probably replacing the joists, filling the joist gaps with insulation, underfloor heating and screed ten overboarding with hardiebacker to give some extra thermal mass......... Fab.
