Priced up for a job i am half way through, removing 2 layers of tiles (10 sqm) and tile (board 1st ofc).

Only charged £80 to remove tiles as i thought i would have em off in half a day. However when removing all the plaster has come away so i have had to rip it all right to the bricks, took me a day and half.
Think i am in my rights to charge more as it was necceserry to go right back to the brick work?

I agree with Grumpy, when removing old tiles I always make it clear to the customer that there may be added expense depending on the state of the walls/floor once I have removed them. It is one of those things that you just cannot predict, some tiles fly off leaving no damage at all to the substrate, others bring half the wall down with them.

and iuf you didn't already explain to the customer that taking off the tiles may result in further work due to it ripping off the plaster back to the brickwork just be nice and friendly about it all and explain what has happened, i know when i first did a few plastering jobs i thought i could scrape off some flaky paint and away i go but nooo half the walls flaked off! so i repaired it and appologised to the customer for the delay in completing but it turned out the walls were in a bad way and needed to be rectified in order to ensure a quality finish, they immediately suggested paying me more for the extra work i did, i can only really put that down to 2 things

1) i was polite honest and didnt come across as i was trying to get extra money out of them

2) they were understanding people

hope your customers are nice and understanding about it all and offer you the extra money you deserve, even if its just an extra £50

things come up all the time like this and some collateral damage is expected when removing tile however if you have to make good the walls to the extent of reboarding or replastering this goes outside the norm as it were ,the customer asked you to take off the tiles which you duly did in the process of the customers instructed task unforseen collateral damage took place this could not be foreseen at the time the inital agreement (contract ) therefore its reasonable to ask the customer for the extra costs incurred by yourself to be covered

i agree with what gary' saying BUT its always better to cover your *** before you start and explain the possible problems, then IF more work needs to be dont , then they are prepared!!! that can be the massive difference between the customer feeling they are being took for a ride and/or they are pre-warned of the EXTRA expense..nobody like surprises that invole unexpected higher bills...id swallow this one and bite the bullet....experience and all that

Depends on what you said before doing the job penno mate, and I think you have been in the job long enough to know about the chances of finding bad plaster under old tiles :huh2:

The main thing I stress heavily on when I have to remove old tiles is not knowing what condition the walls are like under old tiles and am unable to price exactly as I don't know 100% what the job will entail untill old tiles are removed, and everyone has always been fine with this.
