If it's unsanded grout it will come out pretty easily with a grout rake or razor knife, sanded is a different story. I've tried many different tile cleaners and not one works on badly stained/dirty grout - the grout still looks like crap afterwards.

My wife tried Aquamix grout colorant on a job last week and was very impressed with the result, easy to apply and, although contrary to the manufacturers instructions, cleaned up with a moistened cloth - it looks great. Another option for you to consider anyway.
