how many of u have used a closure before while tiling ??

personally i dnt use them but alot of ppl i no use them all the time wondering what everyone thought of them ?

Well Tom there are closures and closures!
If you notice them then its not acceptable (IMHO).
But sometimes it is aesthetically beneficial to reduce the size of a tile to give the impression that the finished 'look' is perfect.

some times they are a nessarcary evil and can enhance the setting out when done cleverly, other times they are a lazy way of getting out of cutting ,all depends on the circumstances

Ok, I'm stumped. I thought I'd come across most things on this forum over the past few months, but never this. What is a closure??

when you reduce the size of the tile by cutting it down to help with your setting out often done in door ways under the door to aid with setting out, it was common practice in wall tiling many years ago but is frowned upon now days ,you often see closers above the door heads where tilers try to get a full tile coming away from the architrave either side of the door ,classed as lazy setting out these days, imo

its like say your tiles are 400 long and u have a door way say 750 so u would start a full tile either side of the door and above put two cut tiles in by taking 50mm off two tiles for talking sake and if you looking up it looks like two full tiles

some people do it to help wwith setting out or u get some lazy ppl who put them in everwhere even if it looks good or dosent

A closure is to reduce a tile in size to fit a space between 2 other tiles..other wise it would not fit...more used in victorian patterns..this can be done over a number of tiles to create an even look..

I have seen it done over window heads and door heads...and also around the outside of border insets on floors...

As Tj mentioned sometimes it is unavaoidable it certain situations...but 99% of the time it is not a method needed to be used...but when used correctly it cannot be detected easily.

i came across a bathroom a couple of years ago and there was plenty of closures going on in there, lol. at least 5 and well noticeable too:lol:

i do the tiling on the mcdonalds and i see lots in the old tiles gd job were tiling over them now lol
