Time's Ran Out

I realise I may be out of order and as this is in the Pricing/Quotes one may wonder why I bothered replying, but sometimes (and this is one of those times) when I wonder what has happened to the art of competitive estimating and providing a professional service on the basis of the free market economy.
You put in a price that you will be happy to work for and bring a salary over a 12 month period that can support your life style and provide for your family.
To simply ask 'what am I up against' is an easy way out IMHO.

More than happy to help on real tiling issues but only the wife knows how much I earn.

Thanks for responses. Only ask as i had an offer of work today and was way under what i usually would charge domestically. Been a while since last on site.

Commercial stuff will always be a bit less. You don't have to deal with the homeowner directly, you often get the materials delivered for you (unless you specify), you save a lot of time doing the work you do in domestic stuff like running around. Probably teaching you to suck eggs here but you turn up, tile, go home on most sites (if it's still the same as 6 years ago or whenever I last did it).

So take that into account. But other than that, I'd not reduce my price. You'll get more meters on each day than domestic so if you want to work for the same over a week then work that out and go in at that rate (or see if that price you've had compares) but don't cut yourself short. You'll end up being know for that guy that does and will always get the lesser paid work.

Another rule I heard a few guys stick to is always make sure it's no more than 50% of your total work over a few months - you don't want to end up working comercial forever just because domestic gets slack. Keep on quoting for domestic stuff out of hours when you're doing your commercial work.

Thanks for that dan. I'ts gotta be worth my while doing or whats the point. Might give it a couple of days next week see whats what. Apparently its a dream job but aint they all?? lol.

Couldnt do commercial full time. Done six months solid a few years back and it wasnt for me, Sick of the down time and other trades **** ups that make my life a nightmare. Nah I like my houses too much. Cup of tea every morning, no breaking the ice of buckets of water. No clowns getting in the way! And all the other stuff that goes with it. Meeting new people every week, new places, etc.

Thanks again!
