This is a question for both experienced tilers and newbies alike.

I am just about to book a course. I have a basic tiling knowledge, but a course is the next step before I go all in. My question is this, what length of course do people think is sufficient. Some say they need 6 weeks as they are slow learners, others say 1 week intensive is fine if you use the right centre. Obviously everyone has a different opinion depending on learning speed..

Can anyone recommend a centre in Sussex or surrounding area?

Cheers

I did a one week course, not a very good one, but I did learn enough to tile well.

These forums have probably taught me far more than the course did though 🙂

Cheers guys,

I'm convinced if I find the right centre, a week would be sufficient...I've learnt so much from just reading this site already.

Thanks Dan,

Swindon is a tad too far for me, cause i'm still doing the night job while learning!

Anybody done a course in sussex?

Cheers

It's true what Fekin says though there is nothing like actually sticking tiles for learning. I did a 4 week course and though I thought the course was really good, I still felt a little apprehensive at the end of it wondering if I could actaully go out and tile for a living. I was, I felt, quite slow during my course and it is the practice time available allowing you to make what would be expensive mistakes in the real world without too much worry. There is someone there to "lean on" or put you right. Doesn't really happen in the working world until you can get back here to the forum and ask questions of the people like DH or Gaz@topps, for solutions to your problems.

I personally would have felt much more confident if each section of my course had been a week longer as I know at the end of the 4 weeks, I was much better as a tile than I was at the start. Probably a confidence thing with me but there are many many people that pick it up straight away and are good enought to "practice" on the job (as the phrase goes  )

I did a 4 week course a Chase Tiling Academy in Cannock. I thought the course was great and really enjoyed it.

However i have to agree with the point that until you go out an do the job for real you don't know fully what it is about. No two jobs are the same.

I felt after my first week on the course that I knew plenty and my confidence was high, but the following 3 weeks taught me much more, techniques etc,

I personally think more than a week is necessary.

The perfect scenario would be being able to do a weeks intensive, then spend the next month or two working as somebody's apprentice, learning lots of techniques and picking up all the tips of the trade.

I'm not too sure how many guys actually manage to go with another tiler, they seem to be busy or slack and either way not too willing to take on somebody who 'could slow them down and make them earn less'.

At school we went on placements,a tiler could benefit having a learning labourer for a week,if the government would only fund travelling and lunch expenses.....never happen will it ffs

Take a look at our courses, by clicking the link at the bottom of this post.

We are regulated by Construction Skills and City & Guilds. They say that a week is no where near long enough for comprehensive underpinning knowledge training (which is a mixture of theory and practical training / assessment).

All to often we have students here that have had to come and get further training as they have been mislead by other training centres as to what they will learn.

Its very dissapointing as most people have made a decision to change their lives and part with a lot of money, only to be ripped off and left sometimes devestated.

Best regards
