Decided that any work comes my way involving cheap/crap tiles i am going to turn it down. Doing a small bathroom for an old bloke atm which should take one day but has turned into two, nightmare.
Has 8p tiles from Topps and are that thin when i pull down on my ts 40 the breaker doesn't even touch the tile. Have had to put a sheet of cardboard under tile and one above to pack it out so i can break them, half smash to bits.
Not worth the money or hassle.

Any of you just say NO as soon as you see a job?

Not yet but wished I had loads of times. At the other end of the scale, one customer has bought some glass mosaic tiles at 240 quid a meter for her 6 mtr splahback. Told her I won't do it until they take the old tiles off and have it perfectly plastered flat before I start. They are making a right pigs ear of up to now!

penno mate wil tell u a little story i got same cutter as urs but also once bought a cheap cutter bout £60 rubi pocket rocket somthing daft like that.

The beauty of it is that the breaker has hardly any back bone in it ie. struggles with everything except really cheap tiles like the ones u mention so keep it on hand when such customers come along.

Maybe u sud look into a pocket rocket

I love nice cheap and cheerful tiles lol

All the best Raja

I know what you mean! I'm fairly new to the industry but already realise the quality of tile is very important and can screw up the easiest of jobs

One of my first jobs involved using cheap white tiles from B&Q, absolute nightmare!! the shades varied greatly and you nearly able to snap the tiles with your bare hands.

One of the first questions I ask now then quoting is where the customers are thinking of getting the tiles from and their budget. I try to point them towards a couple of quality suppliers where I have trade accounts.

Cheers

Used them before and had no problems with them other than the odd one or 2 shattered when snapping them, but in general, a good little tile for vey little money if a customers on a tight budget.

Add in a decent mosaic strip for a border and you get a nice clean looking bathroom for very little money.

If your cutter can't even get the breaker to touch the tile then I'd bin the cutter.

the rubi pocket is only £25 from Neil at BUYBRAND TOOLS.COM.......great little cutter it is

What does it cut upto, want to replace my small cutter soon.

Edit.

Just looked, pocket 50 look like a good cutter.

Tried using one of those pockets. Realy cheap build quality wheel housing slips easily in the shed gathering dust, I wouldn't even embaress myself putting it on Ebay. For the same money got myself a small montolit. Robust and beats the pocket hands down. Cuts those thin white tile from topps no problem and no breaks.

Most of the time it isn't the tile that is the problem rather the surface you are expected to tile to. At the end of the day if it doesn't look right then the tiler is the one to shoulder the blame rather than the plasterer that was there before him.

Tilers can't walk on water.
