hi all, great forum here with many excellent suggestions but I am still struggling to figure out the best way forward with my project.

I am looking to create a steamroom/shower area from the old separate loo. The exterior wall is brick, the two interior walls are of single breeze block construction with plaster and the fourth wall will be timber stud. The floor is wooden, the ceiling plasterboard.

So, do I stick marine ply to all surfaces, or concrete-board as many suggest?
Do I then use waterproof matting on all surfaces before tiling with waterproof adhesive & epoxy grout or do I use the latex paint type method before tiling?

Any advice appreciated...

Steam showers need to be both water and vapour tight. When installing them in rooms with exterior walls extra care is needed to prepare a thermal break to prevent condensation from forming on the back side of the vapour proofing.

Wedi makes some good products for this but you most likely will need more than a 12mm board. Here in Canada we build a load of them and use a sheet membrane from Noble Company called Noble Seal TS. Schluter makes a product called Kerdi DS for steam showers and Dural and Jaegger also have their own sheet membranes.

On the commercial specs for exterior walls it normally shows a large 2" thermal break and a mortar screed.

Do you have a local tile council or such that you can get a specification guide from? We have the TTMAC and the TCNA here in North America.

Don't forget the lighting and the sound! Check out the ThermaSol steam units. World class.
