Hi all

I am about to restore an old fireplace base that has many cracked/broken old tiles. Here's the pics

I'm a novice at this kind of thing, and I've heard that the curved edge style tiles that were the original on the piece are very hard to find these days. They're 4" tiles originally. Would square edge tiles just look hideous?

Or is there any thing else I can do to make this thing half-presentable. It just has to not be an eyesore. The house is being sold so I just need it up to a standard that looks presentable basically. And budget is tight.

Any help would be very appreciated.

My mother in law has very similar tiles around her two fireplaces in her house. Her house is a pre-war 1930's mid town house in East London. To have original features like that in a property for sale is likely to make the house more desirable. It is original features that people look for nowadays to reflect the build and style of the house they're buying.

My recommendation would be contact reclamation companies. You will find that they may have bought tiles following the demolition of such features when houses are renovated. Very much worth investigating.

Also have a look around the forum for tiling restoration and any of the guys who get involved with it. They may have more advice for you.
