Cutting U Shape Bit From Tile

Thanks for the advice so far.
I have to cut a U shape piece that will slot around a stud wall at the end of the shower tray.
I have 600 x 300 porcelain tiles and this is the only one i need to cut a slot out of as all the rest have been done with the score and snap cutter.
I have tried one of those hand tile saws but would be there all year I have a angle grinder though would this do it?
They are 12mm thick and the cut doesn't need to be perfect as skirting or a wall tile will cover it.
If this way will cost me more in broken tiles than a electric saw do you have any cheap ones that you would recommend as I will only be needing it for this cut as hire of one is £40.00 for one day anyway?

Drill holes in the corners then use the angle grinder to cut up to and between the holes.

How wide is the 'U'?
I use a grinder to cut tiles quite often (as often as I cut tiles) and they can work well.

I have found these blades acceptable - more expensive may be handy if your going to use it again often.

For a first timer with an angle grinder, personally wouldn’t recommend a continuous rim blade, you could trash it in 30 secs with porcelain and still not achieve your cut.
My choice would be a mesh type blade, they’re readily available now and relatively inexpensive and you will manage the cut, first timer or not.

Depending on width of your cut out, will depend on cut out method, but asPaul says above, you should really drill the corners first to help eliminate unwanted cracks appearing.
Then either follow your outline as Paul suggests, or if you’re unable to turn your blade perpendicular to the parallel cuts because of its narrow width, use your slide cutter to join the dots (drill holes) at the top of your cut out, but do not snap and run the blade up to this line every 10mm or so creating lots of parallel cuts.
Once done, typically you can just tap them out and then tidy the end line up with your blade.

Depends which stores you have access to.
Both Topps and Ctd will carry this kind of blade, possibly more expensive tho.[/user]

I think you misunderstand when he says slide cut he probably means something like sigma 3c3m rather than sigma 8ce with grinder attachment

No confusion Julian, if the angle grinder blade won’t fit between the parallel cuts, join the holes with the slide cutter, and continue with parallel cuts with grinder to create small strips. Tap out.

Not with most porcelain, no. Wet or angle grinder cut only
