Hello everybody!

When tiling onto a wooden floor (floorboards/chipboard etc)with a damproof mat (Schluter/Homelux etc), I've been laying the mats onto WBP ply 12mm or 20mm as well.
Can you just lay tiles onto a damproof mat without the ply because it stabilises the floor enough together with the flex floor adhesive, or is that dodgy and you must always board up a wood floor with ply first?

Any replies welcome.. thanks & Happy New Year !!! :8:

Thanks for that! Just wondered because a wetroom website said it was O.K to put their damproof mats onto a chipboard floor without ply:yikes:
It is the strength of the floor itself that dictates how it should be prepped not just the material used. If the floor is solid with no or very minimal deflection, then Ditra or kerdi (for instance) would be fine straight on top of chipboard.

There are many posts in these forums about tiling onto chipboard. Some peeps will not do it at all, others will in some circumstances (me for instance) but it has to judged on the job situation and appropriate adhesives must be used.

My personal inclination is to lay Hardiebacker as it is glued AND screwed so has less chance of coming up. The adhesive is used as a "filler" of voids as well as helping sticking, the screws hold it down.

maybe misunderstood the info on one of these wetroom websites... anyway, always good to check these things with fellow tilers....last summer re-did a floor that some der-brain/cowboy tiled onto chipboard and yes I laid 12mm ply first but that wasn't with a damproof mat. I've wondered too how the acrylic tanking products that you spread onto a floor like glue compare in efficiency to damproof mats..not as good? What are they like for insulation too if you're laying cables onto them? Better to use a board like wedi not a solution that you spread...?
Cheers :dizzy2:
