just wondering why its a must to use a uncoupling membrain with most stone jobs and not with ceramics ? just one of those questions i dont no the answer to ! thanks

It isn't a must, just a failsafe.. Some stones are a lot softer than say porcelains and vitrified floor tiles, so lateral stress from heated screeds etc can cause stress cracking easier on softer stones etc IMO..
