Do i need ditra?

Doing a 45msq floor soon. The floor is made up of 25mm exterior grade ply on joists, the actual joists will be supported, and extra noggins will also be fitted. The tiles are 600x300 porcelain, i was planning on using ditra matting as well, but the customer phoned tonight saying that will put him about £500 over his budget. Do you think it would be a good idea to lose the dita, or is it really needed. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

If it was stone then yes deffo uncouple it.. but an S1 adhesive with the porcs will be fine IMO..

I wanted to go straight onto the ply if its possible.

It is possible but even with 25mm ply screwed direct to the joists you will get shrinkage in the wood and this could transfer through the tiles (even porcelain) IMO.

Hi Phil, I'm never thrilled about tile set directly on plywood. For me, with the size of those tiles, I would want to install the Ditra to feel more confident about the installation.

I also understand the need to get the job....so I would just show the customer a sample scrap of Ditra, stuck to a scrap of plywood, with a piece of tile bonded to it so they can see what the product is....and then if they decide to decline the Ditra then it's their decision to make.

I hate to sound like a car salesman, but a 500 pound budget issue over such a large floor really isn't much money per square meter or square foot, and there is no question in my mind that the Ditra provides the value that you would be selling to the customer.
