Rizzle from the Portizzle

well been at grand designs excel for the last 9 days all you here about is cracked tiles on floors again and again and again and how many times i have said floor tiles only crack when you let your buidler who does a little tiling do your tiling or your plummer who does a bit of tiling do your tiling or your decorater do your tiling and 100% they all nod and agree so why do you let them do it they said they could it seems to me to many trades under vaule what we do how has it come to this ? that even joe puplic under value us .is it the shops keen to do sales .the surplies of all our tools and materils under value us and more keen to sell no matter the cost or out come after all they have so many get out calls but still keep the cash .so why do so many not pass them on to tilers ?

I think you stated the obvious Ray it's down to sales but there seems to be no follow up to the standard of work or experience that should follow suit to the works.

clerk of works used to check all site work so when you got there it was right then check what you do to the mm now its the site forman who may have been a labour a few weeks earler. our a wood bucher who could not make it on price but talked the talk .

There is an underlying agenda from some of the big tool and tile manufacturers to bring the tiling under the DIY catagory

I remember the clerk of works on sites, you had to be clever to pull the wool over their eyes.

Most people would'nt know what one was nowadays and who checks everything, nobody....experience dos'nt seem to count for diddly....

That must be why the job I'm on at the moment the guy done his own tiling, couple years down the line I'm having to sort out problems and wish a total rip out should have been in order.

At one point I wanted to walk off the job, utter utter stress...just want to swear sometimes or scream.

of cource you are right but being a tiler is what makes my blood boil three day cource 3 weeks nvq 6 weeks nvq you are not fit to grout on your own let alone to hold an nvq with tiler on it

So. What can be done about it.
As a forum, as a group of good, skilled tradesmen. What could we do to make the difference?

when learning my trade most of the companies we worked for had clerk of the works, one of them i will always remember was 2mm phil and if it wasnt right you would be doing it again, no matter what costings were involved

Not sure why I should worry about other peoples tiles cracking as no matter what you say Joe Public will never listen!
If they spend 100's of pounds / metre for tiles they'll pay for them to be fixed properly, but if they spend £25/ metre for tiles they won't pay £25 for fixing plus all the adhesives, Ditra, sealers etc.
My 6 inch white tiling is ok at £35/ metre but since they cost £6.50/ metre to buy, I don't get many requests.
We all want the work, but it takes a strength of character to walk away or a good order book.

Phil Hobson..

I think the future looks ok. There will always be people who will want to fit their own. But with the fashion leading to larger format tiles and the very large format that Ray is selling, this will make the trade more valuable.
