Doing your Accounts

How often do you fellas do your accounts, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly? It's that time of year for me again when I have to submit my year end accounts to my accountant, and I hate it. It gets in the way of work for me. !!!!

I used to use an accountant now do my own books,and also do my tax returns on line takes about 20 minutes its dead easy.

i prefer to do my own accounts and tax return, go through the paper work once a month and fill in the tax return when it arrives..

I should do them monthly at least but tend to catch up quarterly as the accountant keeps on at me each quarter.

Shouldn't do it like that really as year end is a maul finding things we've missed and re-jigging VAT to equal properly.

I also "sell" to EU so along with a VAT quarter, I have what's called an ESCL quarter. Which is basically declaring what sales I've done to EU and letting HMRC know. So that's an added maul too.

I've really got on top of mine in recent months, used to do them all hand written, now just use excel, much easier. Write everything up once a month. 11/12 books have gone to the accountant already, this is a miracle for me, normally hand them in a week before deadline!

i pay the accountant i earn her wages on the hours i spend doing something i enojy not sifting through invoices , receipts etc

I used to do mine by hand religiously every Sunday :smilewinkgrin:, but as the years have rolled on I've become more and more lazy about it. Last year I didnt do my books for a whole year then crammed it all in to 3 afternoons. I've not been much better this year, did 8 months worth up to Christmas and not looked at them since :yikes:.

I pay accountants monthly, so they do most work. And end of the year i pay my daughter to sort my receipts invoices etc. :hurray:. This way i can concentrate on my work.

I try and keep my records up to date each week, it still doesn't stop me taking ages to hand in my accounts to the accountant.
I am considering filling in my own returns.
I also send the taxman about £400 a month by transfer, obviously i don't like it, but it does help with the January and July tax bill shocks.
I wish i was paid more by CIS, but commercial is quiet for me at the moment.
