dome ceilings

Hi,
we have 2 ceilings to form and tile in marble mosaic. one is a steam room, this a dome ceiling,the other a shower, which has an arched ceiling. We will make the dome from wedi boards. has any one got any tips for setting out and fixing? the client wants all the joints to be the same and no cuts. there is a 1mm tolerance in a 2m length through out the whole job. on the ceiling we will have a tolerance of 0.5mm.

our plans is to get some centre lines pinged, then cut the sheets down to strips of 1. then do a 1/4 of the ceiling at a time. not being able to put them down dry is the problem. we did think about fixing them 1 by 1. there's about 3.5m2 in each ceiling. so any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it will be possible to achieve this without staggering the pieces, which would obviously lead to cutting.

thanks phil, nice job. the ones we have to do are just the ceilings, the walls a marble slabs. i don't think it will be possible to achieve no cuts. it's going to be a bit of a head scratcher this one, i think

Don't think the mosaic on the domed ceiling will stay in line due to the fact it reduces in circumference..

Hi Simon, could you not "fan" the mosaics (cut into 25mm strips) and bend to contours, I have done this on curved surfaces in the past. You wil still have some cuts though.

Sorry Simon, I just read your 1st post again. This is what you intend to do

I've not set a mosaic on a dome before (I was about to start on one when the client ran out of money!) On an internal dome you won't get away without cuts unless the mosaic pieces are 5mm. With 10mm you'll still end up with gaps of 3mm at the base area of any reduction.

Awkard job to say the least, time consuming and seems impossible because of the dome.

it may be best to suggest using a penny round mosaic on the celing or a hexagonal mosaic this will give you a ceiling with out obvious cut peices throught the field of the dome and the joints sizes are easily adjusted with the penny rounds ,you will see cuts where it meets the wall linings ,I would get the dome made out of fibre glass as this will be easily and cheaply done at a plastics factory if you have one local to you and fix and grout with epoxy, hope this helps Gary

the ceiling were changed to two barrel ceilings. so there was no problems at all. i have posted a few pics, but there was not really enough light. sorry it's taken so long, it's been a busy couple of weeks.

how about cutting mosics into strips and then staggering the bond on the way up??

For a domed ceiling I would go round horizontally in strips. The rows would end up staggered and for no cuts just open out (or close up) the tesserae to fit. Once you get going it doesnt take too long. That was how I did this bowl and spa bath, same thing but upside down lol. All good fun.
