Discuss Door mat gaps consideration in the America Tile Forum / Advice Board area at TilersForums.com.

Hi Tilers question for you please based on your what you believe to be a correct way / standard

Front porch is it common practice to leave a gap under the door for a mat even if it's a small one ? when you are planning to re-tile this area

Q 1: If you planned to lift the tiles in this area that had a door mat already around 4mm thick - and re-lay different tiles - would you consider the door mat ?
is it common practice to consider this ?

Q 2: would you expect the customer to tell you they wanted a door mat if it had one already.

Thankyou for any replies Shane

Hi Dave the kitchen company removed the old floor tiles in the kitchen and porch around 40sqm in total the new tiles were thinner but because much more adhesive has been used the porch area for some reason it will now longer accept a door mat - we literally have around 1mm gap and the door cannot be raised

the kitchen company said we should of told them we wanted a door mat but from our opinion we would of thought it would be common sense on a front door and they removed the old one to dig up the old tiles

they will not fix the issue

from your honest opinion as a company owner - are we expecting too much here ? what are your thoughts on this ?

thankyou

Hi ShaneH

I suspect they used more adhesive to get the tiles level or flat. Perhaps the old tiles were not level/flat. The alternative may have been to have a slope, obviously difficult to say without seeing it before and after.

It is only common sense to you as you know you wanted a door mat, unless you told the tiler this they didn't know your plans. From a tilers point of view we come across a whole host of different scenarios and problems and on occassions you might find yourself close to the underside of a door, but as long as the door functions as it should then thats fine. As stated above the solution would be to have recessed a mat in the tiles. Have a chat with tiler to see if it is possible to lift some tiles to accomodate a recessed mat.
