Door steps

Went to start a repair on some door steps & taking the damaged tiles off it has pulled away the mortar or cement they were fixed to about 20mm
I was going to shutter it back in then tile but was wondering if there's any board, Hardi etc that's suitable for outdoor use?

Ardex do the AM 100 which is a very good product, can be used upto 20mm. They also do the A46 which can be used up to 50mm. Both rapid setting.

I would be trying to get it flat on the front of the step & I think it would be easier for me to get a flat surface fixing a board.
I'm not too handy with a trowel working like a plasterer.

Make yourself a gauge out of timber, one piece that lays flat on the step the other at right angle to the angle of the riser..if you see what I mean.

Yeah got you, just use it like a Darby?
I always like to tile to a flat surface that's why I thought about fixing boards.
Has anyone ever used Hardi outdoors?

Knauf make an external version of the aquapanel board. Insulation express sell it

A few quid for that!!!
I wonder why Hardi don't recommend their boards for external use?
You go into CTD & they have the Hardi off cut in a sealed container with water.
I suppose as water can pass through it then it could blow in the frost.
Wonder if you tanked it it would be ok?
Would a Wedi or Marmox board do the job as these are waterproof?

Won't be using it, flinging ideas about..

I would use the AM100 mate it's a great product and probably a bit cheaper in the long run. Make yourself a frame for the step, ie: get 2 pieces of flat and straight timber sitting on top of your step one on each side of the step and slightly overhanging the riser, then screw two pieces of timber into the underside of the top two. You will now have two little frames with right angles at each side of the step, loose lay these over the step and pack them up or down so they are level (all this will only take about ten minutes) then fill the gap in the middle with a derby. It's pretty easy mate.

Im sure there probably is and TBH i cant see why your idea of tanking hardi back and front wouldn't work.... apart from maybe the frost thing.
