Door threshold/trimming door

Hi all

I've been reading through loads of posts some great info...i have a few of questions...

went to look at a job today...customer is using 7mm ceramic tiles.

firstly the door needs trimming it currently just clears a 7mm tile. Firstly i will be plying over existing boards 12mm then using 10mm floor trowel...from posts i've read on here my understanding is that although i'm using a 10mm floor trowel once tiles are stuck down the adhesive will be compresed to more like 6mm.

So to be on the safe side i should ask the customer to trim the door by 2cm?

I'll offer to trim the door myself with the Fein (i plan to invest in one) and charge accordingly...whats the best way to do this using the Fein? mark off 2cm line and then cut across freehand (i'd worry about getting it straight)?

I noticed the door was hollow also will this cause me any probs?

And the last question! At the door going by the above measurments there will be a gap to floor of 25mm can i get a threshold to this exact size from b & q etc? or do they have to be packed out in some way? and cutting it to size i guess i can just use the Fein?!

I have a door trimmer, it looks like a circular saw and you dont have to remove the doors, i charge £10 per door.

£10! to little m8...(in my opinion) i'd charge £25 min and put it down as a variation. I mean lets be honest what are the chances the customer is going to take the door off saw it with a handsaw and re hang it...for the sake of £25.

What is the name of the door trimmer you have?

any help with other questions?

The trimmers are called a carlton door trimmer, not cheap though cost about £230 if you can still get them, does the job though in about 20 seconds with the door still on the hinges, great piece of kit. Personally i wouldnt use the fein, take it off and use a saw or electric plane, make sure you dont rip off the vaneer of the side of the door, come at it from both sides

Looks like they have been discontinued don't know why. There are similar tools on the market as above.

Enduro from previous posts i see you have one of these...how often do you have to replace the blades? what type of blades do u use?

Out of interest Darren why wouldn't you use the multimaster? I thought the E-Cut blade was intended for this job?

When a door has been on for 20 years and god knows how many coats of paint I rather go the door trimmer

I guess you need to be carefull of nails on the door.

Does it plinter or tear off the outside edges?

some doors can be a pain to get off,but i also use an electric planer,very quick and easy to use,and a lot cheaper.

Yes it is a karlton, and £10 per door and it takes about 15 seconds to do...i think thats a fair price. first job i used it on i had 12 doors to trim, it has paid for itself several time over.
