doorway with no architrave.....

just thinking is it possible to make a room look nice if you was to take off the architrave and tile up to the doorway... what do you think?

You ever used a Fein to just whip off the bottom of it to slide the tile under? Use the tile as a guide, and it takes like 20 seconds per architrave. Looks lovely.

sorry dan I don't think I explained it very well I meant actually taking the architrave off and tiling the wall rite up to the doorway and finishing it with trim? what you think of that would it look decent?

Ohhhhh I see I see.

Eeeerm, yeah, I'd have to see the tile and door frame style and stuff like that. I think that can be a lot down to personal preference to be honest. I can see it looking awesome and minimalist in some rooms/setups. But I can see it feeling a bit unfinished in others.

Architrave us originally used to hide the gap or messy bit behind it between the wall and door frame. So the fixings might be visible, or the plaster might not meet the door frame perfectly, and if it does, it might be cracked as the wood expands easy and the plaster wont. etc etc etc.

So you could be in for a surprise if you start to pull it all off in a room and find even just one frame isn't hitting the wall nice, and now you have to stick it all back on again without messing anything else up or cracking gloss paint or whatever is going on in the room.

I could see it looking smart though like I say if you can pull it off and tidy up all the walls where they meet the door frame etc though.

yeh I was thinking about that and I suppose if the wall was say plasterboard with a skim and a timber doorframe would this need an expansion gap lol.

Errr no. Not advised as there is constant movment in the frame and shock when opening and closing.

It is possible and does look great when making the whole door casing out of stone or granite but that is as a stand alone frame and not when it is bridging joints around the frame

Seen some awesome ones on grand designs that really look smart and they've pulled it off in a few ways. Having no doors on is the most minimalist way I guess and then you're problem is half solved, you treat the thing as external corners like any others.

As Rob says though, you're playing with fire in existing builds with doors on.
