Yikes! I'll have to go and look for the photos I have of a bathroom that we redid about two years ago. Among countless other disasters, the
tile in the shower was set with mastic that had virtually no adhesion to the back of the tiles because it had skinned over by the time the tiles were set in place. They used porcelain
tile so the mastic in some places where they did spot bonding never dried, and 8 months later when I tore the job out the mastic was still as wet as when it was in the bucket. They ran the shower pan liner on the SHOWER SIDE of the backer board, and then set the
tile DIRECTLY TO THE PAN LINER. Instead of
mud on the shower floor on top of the pan liner, the used THINSET to skim a small coat over the pan liner, then set river rock stone WITH MASTIC on the shower floor. They set the curb tiles with mastic directly on the pan liner and it was still wet.
They didn't fold the pan liner in the corners and instead they cut it out in the corners. They used a regular floor drain instead of a clamping three piece drain and used latex painters caulk to "seal" the liner to the perimter of the drain.
And all this is just what they did in one shower in one bathroom. :mad2:
This guy is still in business and still making a killing.
