dropping prices

i have noticed in my area of east sussex that i have been quoting as usual but lost about a dozen jobs since january due to people undercutting me, is it happening in you're area yet?

Some people are more driven by price than quality !!!! They also often learn the error of their ways when the job is done :hurray:

Its happening to me mate, I'm in SW London. I've got the POLS, the General builders, the DIY'ers etc, General handymans. I've done loads of quotes and I'm not getting any work. Even work from reccommation. I've heard the remaining Pols are working for £8 M2!!!! So, I loose my home and they go back. Its not really fare in my oppinion.

same problem here to mate they think cheapest quote must be best and how wrong they are been out to price repair work other handy men have done £200 to tile a bathroom what do they expect a dasaster they are giving us all a bad name!:mad2:

I started a full house today for a customer who is a retired builder,built the house himself,perfect walls and floors(sweet) didn't undercut my price and priced no one else.He told me that he knows builders who are tiling and plasterers also but joiners make the best tilers( i told him i used to be a wood machinist),lol.

i do joinery too , theres no tolerance when joining wood, its either spot on or a near fit ............it cant be both

very much like tiling....................its either spot on or its lipping........it cant be both

Prices are on the slump, we all have a bottom line. Just walk, wish them luck, never work beneath your bottom line or you will kick yourself the whole way through the job.
Plus the phone will ring and you will have to turn down a nice wee earner at short notice.

I turned down a newbuild this morning, couldnt do it in his timeframe. Won it on price as well! :mad2:

still get work at my usual rate, albeit on site at £30m2,had a couple of domestic calls, that I missed, today, so I'll give them a ring tomorrow.

I'm in East Sussex and im as busy as ever, had to turn two jobs away as couldn't fit them in...One was 80sqm kitchen utility room floor, another was to fix a lorry container full of natural stone into a manor house, but couldnt fit it in for 6 weeks, bloody shame as both would have been really good jobs!!!

Your right about the tolerences Mike,i worked for 16 years as a wood machinist and i worked in tenths of a millimetre so when i started tiling i was in heaven.

I will keep you in mind, i did pass them onto a mate of mine, as he puts work my way and dosent pinch my customers. And as long as you understand that from the word go, i will send a bit your way.
