Expansion Joints

Hi All,

Floor job coming up that will need expansion joints. What is the maximum gap i ca have before putting them in ? Would you use Silicon or a pre made one ? Anyon know where to get them ? Thanks for your help again :hurray:

Do you mean the gap between the tiles or how big the area is before fitting an expansion trim?

what's the span of the floor? indoors/out? more info please!

I would also recomend pre-formed, It gives more strength than open Silicon/ mastic joint.

8 to 10 metre's with no under floor heating maximum feild size 80 to 100m.

With under floor heating I think its 5 to 6 metre's.

Dural are cheaper than Schluter, think Genesis make them as well.

Room is about 11m by 5m onto a newly screed floor. Have spoke to the customer today an they say they have been told no expansion joint needed. I think one may be needed. Am i right ??

Do you know who told them that? As said above you must include a movement joint every 7.5 - 10m (british standards) so you are just over the limit. The call would really be down to you and the substrate. I take it the new screed has been left for long enough to cure?

Pre-formed profiles are maintenance free and can be installed at the same time as tiling the floor. Would be my choice

Personally then at 11 mtrs i wouldn't use one and leave enough on the perimeter joints..An uncoupling membrane would also be a very good safeguard to prevent tenting.

I agree with Dave on this one. Is this domestic or commercial? What sort of traffic is the floor likely to have?

Domestic job, kitchen floor. Customer won't have a decoupling membrane, says it cost too much !!!
