Expansion Joints

Now that u've read all these publications @JulianSidney what conclusions have you drawn? 🙄

Expansion joints are used in tiles when they cross over exciting joints in the substrate which allow for movement in the building, either through the middle of floors or up walls, in corners or round perimeters.

Movement joints don't go right though to the substance, but brake the tiles in areas to allow for the expansion and contraction of tile and adhesive material over time due to heat and / or moisture.
This "area" should NOT be the same size for all. It should be different for different tile materials as ceramic, porcelain or stone all have different expansion coefficient when subjected to heat or water.
A black tile which is exposed sun need a different movement joint area compared to a white one in the same place, as would slate compared to ceramic.

My conclusion is , what we are asked to do by the Tile association and B.S. Is way short of what we should be doing if you do it scientifically.
Saying that I expect they have worked on a worst-case, i.e. black stone in a sunny conservative. Which means your light coloured porcelain in a kitchen / lounge with very little heat or moisture change will be fine with larger movement area's.

Whilst I've never found joints to be 'exciting' haha
I think I get your meaning🙄
Sorry that's belittling the time and effort you've put into your post,
Funny nevertheless haha

That's actually really interesting Julian, thank you very much!
That actually goes some way to help me understand the mechanics behind it.

I'm gonna have to make time to read those articles now, just not today haha

Really appreciate your input Julian,
Thanks!😉

Would still like to know why a suitable flexible grout can't be used to allow for the moment, without the need for moment joints .

This site needs some reading , very informative. And explain alot of what is questioned on this site by the members.

Mmmmmm!!!!!! So no expansion joint then, that is upon the fact that you are using a suitable flexible grout is being used for the rest of the floor.
Expansion joints don't have to be ugly....well that's what I've just be told in another thread.
