Expectations

What is your expectation in terms of skills level and production from someone who has been tiling for 16 months ? Just asking as I am concerned that I am expecting too much from someone who is working for me , I can be a grouch ,so I want to put it out there about what is a fair amount of work and an acceptable standard and a fair rate of pay for a days wages

Should be capable of basic cutting mixing n sticking by now surely..but every days a school day n your man had what 300 working days at school..not long, not long at all..sounds like you set him on at too much money from the start cuz if it wernt about the money and his production wouldn't be an issue, should be on basic wage ie £50 a day plus a bonus for hitting your targets. That should soon get him to pull his finger out..

is £50 a day not under min wage. i would expest him to be able to mix cut and grout to a good standard and maybe do a few metres a day with easy enough tiles and good surfaces to work on... thats guessing but as i dont employ someone

£50 a day is way to much for a apprentice at 16/17/18 year old .
Minimum wage is around £3.50 for under 20s .
You pay a apprentice to much money, when he is out of his time he will want TOP DOLLER.
A good employee is worth a good wage , but he has to earn it 1st .

Trouble is I don't know ,I really like the guy he came to me as someone who can do the job but makes a lot of mistakes and is very untidy , I know I need to be patient and build his confidence but I forever repeating myself and getting annoyed with him and have to double check even basic tasks

It does seem u've made ur mind up tho mate!
If ur getting pissed with him after only few months and ur STILL repeating urself, either half his money til he bucks up or its adios my friend.

It's a hard thing to do, to take someone's livelihood!
Esp at that age, but unfortunately for him you're not a charity Gary!
So if he's not actually making u money but costing you, then it's either a pay cut to a point where it's financially viable for you to stop what you're doing to teach, or its I'm sorry fella but.......
Doesn't make it an easy choice tho!

Sounds like youve been very patient. messy work would drive me nuts. he doesnt sound brilliant even after a few months with you. maybe the trade is not for him.

I kept telling my labourer how to grout for 5 months.he kept doing it his (wrong) way so he is unemployed now....
I would explain twice how to do things than gtf. It is stressful to go and check somebody's work and worry if he hasn't **** up.
Just my opinion and story

At 32 or in fact at any age,you have either got it or you haven't.
I have seen a non tiler friend do his bathroom and kitchen tiling perfectly satisfactorily,because he had IT.

In similar conversations with other tradesmen and people from other walks of life regarding similar situations your are in at the moment,and the scenario is the same......they are given advice after advice,support after support,warning after warning and the end result is the same,some people just don't have IT............
So it's time to say Goodbye!

Ive been doin it about that same amount of time full time now And im tiling everyday and have not been snagged for about 10 months for any issues other than little quick fixes. But im on site so that could be a factor. I am taking home just over £50 a day, hoping that will change but when is the question im asking myself atm lol

No mate had a lipper about 2 weeks ago took me about half hour to replace and grout thats the last one i can even remember. Im not grouting same day i grout the next morning so im just getting that m2 fixed

I do about 13m2 fixed and grouted per day n half mate
