My plumber mate fitted a new shower in a freshly tiled shower cubicle and then started on the new shower door in an en-suite. He unscrewed the old runners either side that held the old shower screen but it was siliconed to the tiles and was solid so 12 tiles in total needed to be removed (along with runners) and replaced before he could do final fix.
Customer picked up replacement tiles yesterday so I get there this morning thinking easy 1/2 day job. Tapped tiles with knuckles - sounded very hollow and a fair bit of flex. Got the first tile off to discover the old solid tiled wall with pipes running down it. Previous tiler had screwed 2 lengths of timber into the old tiled wall and nailed a couple of sheets of plasterboard (which were back to front) to box all this in. Could have done with 2 more vertical studs and some noggins. PB was un primed and all tiles stuck on by a dab of addy in the middle. No tanking and water damage had already started.
Showed customer how it was impossible to remove affected tiles with out also damaging the PB behind. The only strength in these 2 stud walls is the grout. Left this afternoon after cutting out both columns of tiles + PB. He doesn't want to fork out on another 3 boxes of tiles but think he understands these 2 walls are gonna have to come out and be rebuilt.
I don't know how much this poor guy paid for this job and from just looking at it, it seems a top job but all the cut corners the so-called tiler made is gonna now cost this guy dear.
