Went back this morning to fit the alcove shower door so the shower cubicle is all re-built and looking lovely (plus it won't leak). Was looking around the rest of the ensuite, which had been tiled a few years ago, and it was shocking.
Grout falling out all over the place, bad set out.... Then pointed out to customer the entire row of tiles in the head of the reveal had come away and were just holding by grout and Silicon.
He asked me to fix them so I did. Cause of the failure was our old friend PVA. Flakey yellow layer that still went tacky when wet after all this time.
Sanded it all down (good tip Dave), primed and refit.
One thing I noticed with these tiles though was that the beveled edges were really big and the last tiler had butted them all together and grouted the recess that gave the appearance of a 5mm joint - this explains why the grout was failing everywhere. Would I be right in thinking that they weren't designed for this and should have been spaced normally, grouted and then excess grout along the sides of the bevel sponged off?
Obviously I had to follow the set out so I just filled the joints with Silicon (only 3 tiles).
