Bolter

tiling onto laminate floor, that has floorboards underneath is a recipe for disaster. If you imagine, wood expands and contracts ALOT. Tiles do not expand that much at all, and so this floor will fail if you tile onto. Also you cannot be sure of the state of the floor boards.

You need to remove the laminate
Assess the floorboarded area and make good (as in solid) this area.
Next you need to fix tile backer board to the area with 150mm centres.

You will also need to put in expansion trim where the 2 substrates meet.

I would be removing all skirting and architraves for best results and to make things easier for you.

thanks bolter, the laminate was taken up today so im going over there 2moro to look at the state of play with the floor, sorry didnt mean i was going to tile over laminate:oops:
with regards to the backer board will it have to go down if the wood floor is thick and strong with no movement, hi Div i use to have an account with tilestore many years ago but no longer as i came away from that sort of work, my line of work now is landscaping, decking, patios, driveways, extensions, maintenance, fencing that sort of thing. will take some pics of the wood floor and post them up so you can have a butchers and see if ive missed anything you pros would see.

PeteK, nothing personal.. but does it not concern you that you seem to have no basic knowledge or understanding of how the job should be done or how to use or work with any of the materials...

Its one thing being enthusiastic and helpfull - its another being nieve and wreckless.
Its not your money your gambling with, see this all the time. its the bit were we go round some poor couples house and have to try and fix a botch-up job by a mate of her husbands. It then costs them twice as much as it should.
And doing "some tiling over the past year" doesn't even qualify you to hold a trowel, let alone use it..
Just cos i can change a lightbulb, doesn't make me an electrician...

Makes me boil stuff like this.. Stick to standup PeterK, cos this ain't the way to Amorillo...

cheers for the help there much appreciated :mad2: thought this was a place where people like me could get sound advice from you pros so us amateurs can do a good job, and i never do a botch up job of anything hence why im here asking for a bit of guidance and advice but thanks anyway.
We are here to try and help Pete. The trouble is, you are taking on a huge task with every likelyhood of failure (it may also work out fine of course). As has been said previously, even a pro would need to take his time and work through this type of job very carefully. You NEED to have the correct tools for the job, you NEED specialist help and advice for the UFH especially as it is a primary heat source, and finally, you are using tiles that are KNOWN to be problematic to say the least. Keep asking questions as and when you need to but please also heed the warnings that are being given. THIS IS NOT A JOB FOR THE FEINT HEARTED.

My best advice at the moment would be to sit and read through as many previous threads on the forums here regarding b&q porcelain, UFH and mixed substrate preparation. You will then get a good idea of the issues involved with every stage of what you are trying to do.

There will always be folk on here that will have a "dig" if they feel you are out of your depth, but there are many more members that will pass good helpful information freely. Ignore the "digs" and take on board the advice that is offered, we will help as much as we can.:thumbsup:

Pete - an amateur doesn't get paid for doing the job. If you are charging the couple it becomes a professional job and you then have a moral duty to provide that - and with your inexperience a job of this size is out of your depth at this stage of your tiling career.
I cannot accept that moderators are telling novices to ignore advice they receive from forum members and wonder if the state of some of the 'work' we see and hear about are not the result of this free information that is being provided without any site visits or photographic information .
If I 'am having a dig at Pete for advising him against this job then so be it - this is my opinion - so do not present this as the dark side of the forum.
Those of you who are prepared to provide the amount of guidance that Pete requires are being totally irresponsible to our profession.

Timeless John.

Hi Grumpy thanks for that much appreciated, im sure every single person on here asked for help and advice when they started tiling and im just doing the same, i have read more info than i can clearly remember on lots of ways to do what im doing, i have complete confidence in my skills as a tradesman. John from the posts that i have read of yours you are un questionably a serious pro at your craft and i do take on board your concerns and yes it is a monster of a job to do but iam confident it will be a great job done, if somebody wanted info on how to build a multi level deck i would do what ever i could to guide them and help no matter what there experience as everyone is entitled to learn,

As i said earlier..."ITS NOT YOUR MONEY" your gambling with...

Look, if you really want to do it, then go ahead. No one in here can stop you doing the job, we're unaffected by the out come, so the job is irrelevant.
You clearly don't want to take on board professional advise - which is what your said you was here for - 3 people have responded, strongly advising you otherwise.

Your acting like we've ganged up to pick on you, crazy, we took the time to respond to you. Besides the 3 poeple that bothered to warn you, everyone else was happy to tell you what you wanted hear and see you on your way, paying no attention to the Alarm Bells going off, not seeing or caring about the outcome.. And we're the bad guys..

you couldn't see this before, so you never will. :beatdeadhorse5:
