Hi everyone,

Got to do my first quotation in a couple of days. I`ve spoken briefly to the customer and basically it sounds like it`s a bathroom that is already half tiled and she wants the rest of it done. Providing she can find matching tiles won`t there still be a colour variation in the tiles? Surely same for the grout? Would it be easier to try and get her to retile whole bathroom? Assuming I do just continue I was gonna wire brush and bond ( using BAL APD) what I assume will be painted walls then use BAL Blue star addy and BAL grout for fixing ceramic tiles, does that all sound ok? If I have to continue in a shower cubicle should I use BAL Gold star addy?

Sorry for all the questions but as this is my first job (possibly) I want to make the right impression and do a dam good job:huh2: !!

once you have prepped as you say..just use white star ...depending on the tile format.. you might have to use powdered gear....good luck.

Get customer to put a boarder tile in then tile above with same or different tiles, might not look so bad.

Have you been to look at the job first?
Not a good idea to agree to it without having a look at it first. Once there you can give the customer much better advice about what they may need doing. For example are existing tiles stuck to the wall properly? May need a complete re-tile for that reason alone. Also are grout lines Ok if your trying to match them up.

Have you agreed a price without seeing the job? Could be lots of 'suprises' when you start work

Hi Turkish, Depending how old the existing tiles are there's a good chance the new one's will be different sizes, You only need a couple mil difference by the time your've laid about 5 tiles your'd be 10 mil out on your grout lines and It'll look naff. And yes personaly I would recommend for a retile, I like to use flexi powdered gear in showers with superflex grout, If they have power shower I would use bal wp1 on the walls in the shower area before laying a tile. Best of luck

First job

Cheers guys, Am going to look at it at weekend and quote then. Dave, is white star still available? I`ve got a Topps near me but couldn`t find it there the other day.

Topps don,t stock white star any more they replaced it with bal grip..topps can get it for you or if you know where there is a CTD they stock it...

Sorry didn't realise you we're off to quote at the weekend. Didn't read the post properly. Good luck with it. It gets easier with time.

As dhceramics says White Star has been repalced by Bal Grip

Good luck with the quote:thumbsup:

Thanks for all the advice! Priceless! If this goes ok I guess I`ll owe everyone a pint. (As long as i get enough for the job should I get it!!!)

Its hard doing your first quote but I loved it when I did mine. Just make sure you go prepared as you seem to be and be ready for any questions as they will sometimes expect you to know all the answers or make recommendations. The more you can advise them, the better you will look (Without being too cocky of course!!) - Lol. Just go prepared. Fail to prepare - prepare to fail.........

ok i think i`ve got things straight, just one more thing, how long after finishing grouting can the shower/bath be used?

I use BAL grouts and they recommend 2 wks before using a shower....and so does bs standards...

Do not use shower for
at least 2 weeks following completion of grouting - BS 5385😛art 4:1992,
clauses 6.3(f) and 6.4(h).
