Discuss Fixing Elements board to existing plasterboard. in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

Hi All.

I'm installing a new shower enclosure and hoping for some advice on fixing the 12.5mm Abacus Elements board. Once fitted, I'll be adding subway tiles

One of the walls (external) is dot and dab plasterboard, fairly level bar the area of tile adhesive I'm unable to remove without taking the whole thing with it. The wall is 900 x 2200. I've got a couple of ideas of how best to tackle am hoping for your advice as to which one is best. (trying to get done this weekend).

1. Use CT1 / Fix MD adhesive to initially fix the Elements board, then add mechanical fixings (concrete 100mm / core fix 100mm) through elements and plasterboard into the rear, which is a combination brick and block.
- will the CT1/ Fix MD allow for a 3 - 5mm gap to be filled? Behind the board for evenness.
- will the above allow for the weight of tiles. Happy to use more of the EasyDrive concrete screws, will they corrode?

2. Use adhesive to dot n dab the Elements board for flush fitting (I'll try!) then mechanically fix to brick with corefix screws? Least favoured option, I'm trying to keep the extra depth to an absolute minimum.

Even if I took down the existing plasterboard, the walls will be uneven and I'd still be using dot and dab or battens. something id much rather avoid.

Hope you can be of help, very keen to crack on with it today (I've got all the materials mentioned) to get the family the new shower asap!

Thanks in advance and enjoy the weekend.

HMTILING, thanks for responding.

Sounds like a plan. Would you advise any kind of prep for the plasterboard, imagine it'll suck the moisture from the adhesive?

I've got a box of the Corefix 100mm screws / plugs which I'll use to mechanically fix after the adhesive.

Thanks again.
As it’s got adhesive on it I'd prime but not essential if not. Make sure you use the washers too.
You're welcome and good luck
