Discuss Floor former / SLC to a fall? in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

We are looking at a job where we are going to put a shower in an existing corner cupboard.

The corner cupboard is 700mm deep x 768mm wide and we will bring the shower enclosure out the front by a further 300mm. The shower floor will therefore be about 1020 x 820mm to give the enclosure side panel the adjacent wall to butt up against. The customer wants it tiled to a fall rather than using a tray (wouldn't work anyway) but it needs to be raised for the waste to cross the joists. He also wants a door with a short side panel to let more light in. See attached drawing to clear up this babble (pic = 1000 words etc.)

I am going to build a raised platform to tank and tile and was wondering if anyone knows of a former that would fit to create the fall. I have used Mira X-plan SLC to build a fall for custom shaped wetroom floors before but it's a to use & would much prefer a former. Haven't done many wetroom installs so not sure which is best and if it could be cut to suit this shape.

Thanks to all.

Larry - newbie to forum but long-time bathroom tiler.

The tuff2 former from wetdecs can be cut to suit your size opening...

The Tuff2 shower tray former and gulley are realistically priced high quality products with over 50,000 installs to date.
An extremely strong grp moulded shower tray former for wet rooms in new build and refurbishment projects. This former can be used with concrete and wood floors but is favored by us for wooden floors where its strength and fixing points (on all 4 sides) make it effective for spanning floor joists. The Tuff2 tray former features :

  • A slim 22mm depth
  • Extreme strength - no under boarding required.
  • Can be cut to within 150mm of gulley - shorten or make narrower no problem.
  • Cuts easily and quickly.
  • With the same thickness as standard.
  • Offset gulley.
  • Can be used right or left handed.
  • Suitable for vinyl or tiles.
Due to its strength the Tuff2 shower tray requires no under boarding like other bases so is easily dropped directly onto joists and safely screwed home.
The Tuff2 level access former comes in 9 different sizes and is tested to a load of 150kg. These bases can be cut to within 150mm of the waste without losing strength so boxing's or odd shaped rooms shouldn't’t be a problem.
Waste points are off set to avoid joists and allow left or right handed fixing. The ability to be used with both gravity and pumped wastes make this a truly versatile less able and wetroom solution. A realistically costed base used on 50,000 plus installs and is backed by a 25 year conditional guarantee.

Thanks all

Dave, which size would you recommend? I can't quite get my head around how the 4 corners will look when one or two edges are cut off. I don't think the 4 tapers would hit the 4 corners of the shower area.

He wants it tiled using the same large tiles we will use for the floor so I can't use 100mm square ones to hide the tapers.

Any ideas / reassurances / suggestions other than X-plan?

Many thanks again.

Hi larry

If your not using a square former your angles won't be identical as the long sides off set it.

As you are building up it would be worth looking at the Tilux former as this has a gulley in the middle so angles are better, also the trap is just 70mm.

Dave is quite right in sugesting the Tuff 2 but the tilux may be better in your situation................

The all-in-one wet room shower tray former and gulley system for level access wetroom showers
This is not one of the grey insulation board trays !! This tray is manufactured specifically for wet rooms. The Tilux wetroom former is the most advanced shower tray and gulley system available for wet rooms in the UK. Ideal for new and refurbishment projects where floors are made of concrete or wood. Designed in Germany the Tilux tray has been constructed with the installer in mind :
  • Totally waterproof, offering complete peace of mind.
  • Gulley collar factory fitted - gulley locks and seals itself into place.
  • Rigid EPS construction far stronger than the grey insulation type boards.
  • Overal instal height of 115mm maximum.
  • Pre fixed waterproof membrane sealed into gulley collar.
  • Needs no under boarding.
  • Horizontal or vertical waste with knuckle adjustment.
  • Easily cut to shape around boxings, pipes etc
  • Tanking membrane overlaps tray to seal to surround.
Made of extremely strong rigid eps the Tilux tray has a factory molded and bolted flange which the wet room gulley locks into with rubber seals so no putty, paste or Silicon required. The gulley revolves 360 and a knuckle joint helps align pipe work this system is very secure and DIY friendly.
To add to the ease of installation the shower tray former has a waterproof tanking membrane fixed to its upper surface. This membrane overhangs by approx 3" so it can be sealed to its surrounds. The tilux wetroom solution can be used with most leading tanking systems although the Durabase WP membrane is recommended for ease and value.
This former is a breeze for installers as it covers all the bases making the fix quick and worry free. The Drain flange takes away the stress associated with making secure waterproof joints and the tanking membrane is already fitted to the base.
All fittings come in one box the only addition will be your choice of tanking kit and a screen if your thinking of using one. The tilux shower former is manufactured for the Durabase membrane system but can be used with most leading systems Schluter etc
