Forming a step for tiling onto?

Hello all,

Ive been asked to tile a step. The step goes from the kitchen down into bathroom. He wants the step tiled with the bathroom floor tiles. The step is made of a wooden frame. This has chipboard laid onto it at the moment.. He wants the tile laid onto the chip board... Ive told him this is not the best practice as the chipboard may swell up from the moisture from the adhesive and also the adhesive may react with properties inside the chipboard which combined together will probably make the tile come loose....

So basically the kitchen floor - step - bathroom floor will all look like one.

The step is 2ft by 1ft wide. (small step) What shall I lay onto the top of the step prior to tiling, ... I dont really want to have to buy a whole sheet of cement board just for this small bit if I can avoid it. Would plasterboard be ok?

Im talking about the face of the step that you put your foot onto when you step in and out of the bathroom.

buy a sheet of cement board job done,its only 1 sheet isnt exactly going to break the bank

The bit you put your foot on is called the tread board and the front the riser.
If the Kitchen/step/bathroom floors are all going to be the same, how will the step be visible.
As long as the step surface is stable and will remain dry, you could cover it with almost anything but as you suggest cement board would be the best choice.

The tread should be of 1 piece - no joins - so no movement.

I would definitely go for the cement board, glued and screwed. Its a couple of quid and it would be done right. You might end up looking a bit silly if you insist on not tiling onto the chipboard and the tiles lift anyway.

when i said off cuts I just meant i can get One peice small enough to fit the tread....

Ill get a cement board from topps....

with reference to the screws... I have a bag of plasterboard drywall screws (black ones no rust) . will these be ok?

If your using dry wall screws they should be a course thread for timber not the fine thread which are for metal framing systems..

i have bought some cement board - hardie backer and i have one more question.

Im going to be putting it on the riser, side and tread... each piece will be one piece .

Is it ok to to glue and screw this onto chipboard (green) the tread... and the side and riser are 2 by 2 and chipboard.
