reasons for gaps when applying tiles? for movement im thinking any answers would be good please

sorry know it sounds stuipid but just one of those questions i never asked or never thought of asking when i was an apprentice and this may come up if and when i do my ewpa.

hi yes you are right mainly for movement expansion and contraction of tiles if you but hard together tiles will start by chipping edges then eventually push up of substrate the joints also give tiler some play with variations in size of tiles hope this helps:8:

Hello you are quite correct with your first post brinkley in regards to movement as common tiles and stone can increase in size and also decrease in size,
if you lay tiles and stone with no gap (grout joint) due to expansion and contraction of the common tile or stone.
the edge of tile may chip due to expansion (first sign of problems)
the second sign of lack of gaps (grout joints) is an area of tiles will debond from substrate and tend to peak off floor (if you lay a strait edge over effected area it will show as a high point of floor.
laying common tiles and stone with a gap (grout joint) also allows the tiler to adjust tiles because of irregularities in tile size (quite common ).
i do hope this post is of some assistance to your question.

is that bettera Dave:oops: (bit more soberer now):8:
