bumped into a the customer i was working for this week in ASDA today..she was telling my wife how happyshe was with the job and that she will pass my name on to her friends etc...yes its always nice to hear customers tell you that you have done a good job...job satisfaction...

May only be a little thing to them, but means such a lot to us, especially when you try and do a good job !

Couple of years ago I did a job in a small cul de sac............about 6 houses.

Took 18months..........but I ended up doing all 6 houses.
I had people from next door (who i did a few months before) bringing me T and cakes on the hour, every hour. I had a nice fruit cake from over the road (not a nutty kind either). Fruit and veg from the old boy next door to them.

Its a great feeling when you do a good job........and your name gets passed about, but never have I done so many jobs, for completlt different people, in such a small area.

Only downside.............it was 40 mins away from my house

You're not charging enough leatherface  When I first started I was cheap as chips and I’d go that extra mile everytime but all I ever got was grief. As soon as I started charging good money people treat you completely differently. There comes a point when you're earning more money than the client and they afford you instant respect. I do the same standard of work now that I’ve always done, what's wrong with people?

Oh yes I am !!! Was mega bucks on job for design company & I know what they charged her on top. The consultant charges £120 an hour to tell customers what colour cushions will go with their curtains :dizzy2:

I am Grammar School educated, have had a good Management position in my prev employment. My dad went to a posh public school in Monmouth. Have had bloody posh and manners forced down my throat all my life. For god's sake we had fish knives and forks for fish at home, If I was eating soup had to tilt my dish away from me when getting last of soup from dish, was not allowed to shovel peas onto my fork, had to push them on with a knife, china cups and saucers, side plates, napkins, the works.... :dizzy2::dizzy2:
I turn up in my work clothes and some 2 bob millionaires think they are better than me. At least I have good manners, they don't, all they have is a bigger wallet than me and a bigger mortgage & a flash car on the never never.
Would not swap my life for theirs in a million years !
Know you were joking mate, but it really gets my goat !!
yes and love Yorkshire Tea

On a similar note, an old school mate of mine that I got started in the trade as a painter and decorator now lives in London. We drink in a boozer that is yards from his flat, the pub is full of so called high fliers waving money about, so we walk in covered in paint my mate tattooed head to foot and everybody turns their noses up, we finish our drinks and head back to his flat and the shock on the punters faces is priceless when he puts the key into his door, where are we? The centre of Mayfair were flats start at £500,000 plus. Never judge a book by its cover

Some great customers about, nipped over to bit of siliconing for a customer now their sanitary ware was installed. It was in my price which he had already coughed up when i finished tiling. Was offered a cuppa, had a friendly chat with him and his missus, they asked for a bit of advice on their upcoming en-suite then i siliconed away. Tidied up, asked him to check my work. Everyone happy, offered another cuppa but had to get going. He asked me how much it was, i repeated it was in the price and already paid for. He insisted and handed me a few 20's. I siad if you insist give me one of them for the diesel (never look a gift horse in the mouth). He insisted i take them all. Shoved them in my pocket and he said he would ring when ready with the en-suite.
Checked the money on the way home, 100 quid. Couldnt believe it. What a gent! He was loaded but thats not the point, alot of people hardly speak to you and just expect something for nothing!

I have to say I've been very lucky.

I'm a talkative sort anyway, and I'm sure I run the risk of boring customers to death.

I find if you try to take an interest in something they feel passionate about, a customer who thinks you're just the hired help comes around to see you as a person.

I have left the odd job not having got on with the customer but even then I can say I have always been treated well whilst I've been there. One recent customer and I had some difficulties but we both went out of our way to ease things. I would work for him again, whether he would have me back is a different issue - I really don't know.

The property developer types never tip. Tips come from appreciative homeowners who think you've gone out of your way to help.
