a 10/12mm trowel will not giive you that depth of bed it will be reduced by about 1/3 by the time you have pressed the tile firmly into the adhesive

Sorry Gav, I did not make myself clear, a 10mm/12mm trowel will not give a 10mm/12mm bed, as David says above. The trowel notches will give you a solid bed of 3mm to 5mm of adhesive when pressed or tapped in with a rubber mallet/ hammer.
